About Mangrove
Mangrove is a small, home-based school community for children aged 3 to 6 years, located in the leafy neighbourhood of Emmarentia, Johannesburg.
We believe children are capable, curious, and full of potential. Guided by Montessori philosophy and our four core pillars: Observation and Response, Freedom Within Limits, Prepared Environment, and Community. These principles shape how we work with children each day - through careful observation, child-led exploration, respectful boundaries, and meaningful connections with others.
We are committed to nurturing a school culture that is diverse, inclusive, and transparent where every child and family is welcomed, valued, and supported. By honouring each child’s unique identity and working closely with families, we aim to create a place where everyone feels seen, heard, and empowered to thrive.
Why Mangrove?
We named our school Mangrove because we are inspired by the strength, interconnectedness, and generosity of mangroves.
Mangroves grow where land meets sea — rooted in shifting ground, weathering storms, and thriving through cooperation. Their intertwined roots support not only one another, but entire ecosystems, filtering water, nurturing life, and offering protection in uncertain environments.
The word mangrove can mean a single tree or an entire forest. This dual meaning matters to us. It reflects our belief in the power of both the individual and the collective — each child unique, each voice essential, and all of us stronger when we grow together.
In a world marked by instability and division, we look to the mangroves: rooted and resilient, protective and porous, individuals and community at once. They show us that it is possible to stand strong, grow together, and leave no one behind.
